Diagnosis Technology
The Z Machine
Monitoring your sleep does not have to be an arduous task anymore, thanks to advancements in Sleep technology. Typically a sleep study is performed in the lab or at home, to recognize and assimilate several thousand data points to give a comprehensive picture.
Our Sleep Studies
Our office uses a Type II 9 lead sleep study, which is the most advanced, second only to a technician monitored in-lab polysomnography ( also known as the Type I study ).
Insurance approvals are becoming harder to obtain for in-lab polysomnography, however the only differences between a Type I and Type II study are:
- Not monitored by a sleep technologist
- Ocular lead absent
- Leg lead absent (makes it difficult for diagnosis of Periodic limb movement and REM sleep disorders - but does not impact diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Snoring etc).
Sleep Study
Advantages:
- Patients sleep better in their own homes
- Better accuracy because patients are more comfortable in their own home
- Easy to use
- Can monitor continuously for several days in a row
- Abundance of data for a comprehensive picture of a person’s sleep
Advantages of Three Dimensional Cone beam technology
CBCT can map the volume of the oro-pharynx while upright and standing:
- Reduced radiation when compared to traditional CT
- Can map out airway volume when a person is standing upright. A narrow airway while standing upright, elevates the risk of closed or obstructed airway when a patient lies down.
- Can be a useful tool in diagnosing TMJ disorders as well as nasal obstructions that commonly occur in patients with sleep breathing disorders.
